Data Extraction From A Digital Media

July 27, 2016

Extraction of data from a digital media is covered under equipment breakdown coverage on a Business Owners Policy (BOP), if present. Coverage for the expenses to recover data responds when there is direct physical damage to the media where the data is stored. "Accident" means a fortuitous event that causes damage to covered equipment.

Example, you drop your external hard drive on the floor. Direct physical damage occurs. The expense of $1,848 is paid to a a third party data recovery vendor who recovers the data and copies it onto a replacement drive. An example of coverage not being extended - the hard drive simply wears out and stops working without any direct physical damage.

This narrative is not a guarantee of coverage but is general in nature. Each situation is reviewed for its circumstances. Please see your specific policy for coverage, limitation and exclusions.
